JUNE 1996 WEATHER REMARKS HAGERSTOWN MARYLAND DAY 4th- Thunderstorms this afternoon 2:45pm - 3:15pm produced heavy downpours .60" fell, pea to marble sized hail, sharp lightning, and wind gusts to 31 mph. Thunderstorm this evening pasted just to south with another .10" of rain between 7 and 8 pm. 7th- Thundershower 5:50pm - 6:30pm .12" rain, wind to 25 mph. 9th- A warm very humid tropical day with showers and thunderstorms which began 3:45 pm into this evening with heavy downpours .98" of rain, most ended by 8pm. 10th- Few light showers overnight and this morning .02". Very warm and very humid day. Nearby storms to west and east this evening with thunder and lightning display no rain. 11th- Thunderstorm passed mainly to south 2pm -3pm .04" fell. Nearly stationary thunderstorms this evening just to west and north from 8pm - midnight inched closer by 10:45pm and quickly droped .63" of rain in 30 minutes. Several miles just to west and north got pounded with severe thunderstorms and extremely heavy rains. 12th- Light shower just after midnight .01". Light showers and some thunder around 1:30pm. Some sprinkles around 5pm .05". 13th- Light sprinkle around 3pm today. 14th- Hot, high of 90 F. Thunderstorms developed all around this station 6pm - 7:30pm storms were very close and appeared severe just to north but only a trace of rain fell here and alot of thunder and lightning. 16th- Hot, humid day 90F. 17th- Hazy, hot, and humid 91 F. Once again thunderstorms developed all around us between 8pm and 10pm storms were very close and severe just to north, south, and east but only .02" fell here at this station around 9pm, winds up to 24 mph. There was alot of frequent lightning in all directions. TORRENTIAL RAINS / SEVERE LIGHTNING / SEVERE FLOODING 18th- Torrential rains from slow moving and and severe thunderstorms this evening. Lightning and some rain began around 10pm but by 11pm the torrential rains began as storms developed overhead 1.93" fell by midnight also very sharp and almost continuious lightning. 19th- Extremely heavy rains and severe lightning continued with another 2.00" inches by 12:35am, 4.00" fell in 1.5 hours. Rains let up some at this point but still another 1.00" fell by 4:30am as heavy downpours continued off and on all night. So just about 5.00" inches fell overnight. The 4 inches that fell in the 95 minute period is the most I ever saw in such a short period of time. These rains of course caused very serious flash flooding all over the city and county. I've never seen so much wide spread flooding over so many areas from thunderstorms. The farther north and east you went the heavier the rains were, some areas reported 7 to 11 inches. A few more showers during the morning brought the grand total up to 5.23". 20th- Thunderstorm 6pm - 7pm produced .25". An intense thunderstorm 9pm - 10pm with very heavy rains dumped another 1.00" of rain with most of it falling in 30 minutes, also very sharp and frequent lightning. 1.27" fell for days total. 24th- Thunderstorm produced .20" rain 2pm - 2:30pm. Thunderstorm 5:30pm - 6:30pm producrd strong winds up to 46 mph heavy dowmpours and severe lightning. .41" rain fell. Reports of alot of wind damage in some other parts of town with tree and wire damage and some slight structual damage. 29th- Some light rain began late this evening after 10pm .04" by midnight. 30th- Rain overnight till 4am was heavy at times .59"fell. A very hot humid day 95 F. dew point was as high as 82 f. at one point. A powerfull thunderstorm came through 7:30pm - 8pm with strong winds up to 41 mph, very intense frequent lightning and brief heavy rains another .51" fell in 20 minutes. This is the second wettest June on record with 10.83" of rain the wettest is 11.57" in 1928. This is the wettest first 6 months on record with 35.99" of rain this beats the old record of 29.69" in 1972.
